Screen vs. Paper Reading—Which is Better for Learning?
According to research, how students read—not just what they read—matters!
- Students who read on paper score higher on comprehension tests than those who read on screens.
- Reading on screens leads to skimming and lowered attention and retention.
- Reading on paper engages more senses, which boosts comprehension and recall.

Summer 2025 is an opportunity for students of all ages to catch up, keep up, or get ahead at Oxford Learning Burlington South!
Research from the Institute of Summer Learning at Johns Hopkins shows that
- On average, students lose approximately 2.6 months of grade-level equivalency in mathematical computational skills during the summer months
- Teachers typically spend between four to six weeks re-teaching material that students have forgotten over the summer
- Students score lower on standardized tests at the end of summer than they do on the same tests at the beginning of the summer
- They also experience significant learning losses in procedural and factual knowledge during the summer months
- A few hours a week of learning can prevent summer education losses
- The brain doesn’t shut off because school is out—the brain MUST stay active, or it loses its momentum
- If students don’t maintain their learning momentum over the summer, they WILL run into trouble in the fall
- Summer is an opportunity for students of all ages to catch up, keep up, or get ahead!
Please contact Joanne, Emily, or Hailey at 905.632.8444 or burlingtonsouth@oxfordlearning.com for information about our customized academic programs, flexible summer scheduling options, incredible staff, and why Oxford Learning will be the best investment you make for your child this summer!

Coming out of the pandemic, our daughter fell behind in math. After reaching out to Oxford Learning, we were matched with a fantastic tutor who made a significant impact on our daughter’s academic performance. Her confidence in tackling problems and asking questions improved dramatically. Her math scores improved by two full grade levels, and we are extremely grateful for the support we received. We highly recommend Oxford Leaning Burlington South tutoring services to anyone looking to help their child succeed in school. Thanks to all for helping our daughter with math!Sarah D.![]()

Both my elementary school-aged boys started with Oxford Learning this summer, and the results have been outstanding. During the school year both boys struggled and showed frustration with the academic curriculum as taught and presented, specifically in the area of math. After only a few sessions at Oxford Learning, I could see the difference in their understanding of math at their level and I immediately noticed their confidence levels rise. Recently, both my kids thanked me for sending them to Oxford Learning. I think that says it best how well Oxford Learning works and the outstanding results parents will see with their kids' comprehension of their academic courses.Raluca S.![]()

I highly recommend Oxford Learning. One of our children needed some additional help with school. We contacted Oxford Learning and enrolled him over the summer to help him catch up. He had a very thorough assessment that helped pinpoint where he was struggling. The change in the six months since has been incredible to watch. He is a lot more confident, and his love for learning has increased. It isn't usually easy for him to warm up to new people, but everyone has been so welcoming and understanding that Oxford Learning is his favourite place to be. I can’t say enough about Oxford Learning Centre. I first used them years ago with our son in Elementary school, and I was immediately impressed by their teaching methods. They taught him how to understand and comprehend the subject. They built his self-esteem and confidence and relieved our fears by allowing him to fully understand the issues he was having. We reached out to Oxford Learning again when our daughter needed assistance in math for Grade 11. Although she has always been a strong student, the pandemic brought new challenges that left her frustrated and fearing she would not do as well as she had in past years. We did not want her struggling or running into trouble, so we once again accessed Oxford Learning. We chose the tutoring program, where she was connected with a top-notch tutor with a Master's in math. She helped turn a frustrating subject into a successful, enjoyable subject. I've had the privilege of attending Oxford Learning from third grade through my first year of university. It is no exaggeration to say that my time here has fundamentally shaped my academic skillset. Oxford Learning's lesson plans are structured with critical thinking in mind and are complimented by a dedicated team of tutors. The community of staff and students has always been a place of comfort for me. It's this nurturing community that motivated me to continue at Oxford Learning as a tutor for the last year and a half. Being able to give back to the centre has been a truly fulfilling experience. The staff are a joy to work with, and the lesson books help me to structure my teaching while still giving me the freedom to adjust according to the student's needs. Joanne and her team have also been incredibly accommodating in helping me balance my work and studies, which I am very grateful for. We had our son in Oxford Learning throughout the summer and fall of 2024. From the very beginning the staff were so attentive and really seemed to care. Elise did a thoughtful and thorough assessment to better understand his abilities and was so warm and welcoming to our son and our family. She accommodated our availability and was excellent at communicating about the program and the next steps. The centre was incredibly flexible with rescheduling classes and was very prompt any time we emailed a question. Emily was our main contact point, and she readily gave updates and was open to incorporating any goals or areas we wanted our son to get extra help with based on what we saw at home and heard at school. Our son absolutely loved working with Ms. Ann and was excited to go every week- even asking to go on days he wasn’t scheduled! They truly met him where he was at, took his learning seriously, had a warm approach, and engaged him in fun activities and rewards. My daughter started the AP program in high school this year and I wanted to get her extra support to ensure her success. Oxford Learning Burlington South did a great job of helping her manage her course load and develop the skills she needs to be successful. Their tutors were well-versed in every subject and able to help her with all her classes so far including French, math, and science. Special thanks to her tutors, Brandon and Sarah! I really appreciate everything they've done to help.Alison L.![]()

My teenage son was falling behind in school and was hesitant to ask for help. We were referred to the New Street location by a friend. They made sure that he felt comfortable from the very beginning. He formed a great connection with his tutor, Ahmad, and improved his grades by the end of the semester. I was so thankful that Oxford Learning helped improve his confidence and motivation to study. I give this centre my highest recommendation.Joanna G.![]()

The first time I went to Oxford Learning was for their summer camps, and it was really fun. We made ice cream from scratch, which taught me new skills. I ended up staying and have been attending Oxford Learning since 2021. Sabrina is my favourite tutor and has helped me with math and English, and is someone to be your hero. I look forward to attending Oxford Learning every week and am excited to keep learning. All the staff are very kind and caring it isn't just tutoring, it is more.Maya B.![]()

My daughter attended Oxford Learning Center in Burlington South for help with her Biochemistry course, and I couldn't be happier with the support she received. The tutors, Aleks and Hailey, were incredibly knowledgeable and patient, making complex concepts much easier to understand. The office staff — Emily, Elise, and Joanne — were fantastic. They were always flexible, quick to respond, and extremely accommodating, even with last-minute schedule changes. Thanks to their dedication and support, my daughter gained the confidence and skills she needed to succeed. I highly recommend Oxford Learning Center to anyone looking for quality academic support.Shahin S.![]()

I decided to attend Oxford Learning in first semester to get ahead and prepare for Grade 9 math because I was worried about the jump to high school. The tutors are great, and I really enjoyed working with Emily and Brandon. They helped me review concepts from Grade 8, and then we started working through the Grade 9 curriculum. Math is so much easier this semester because of the work I put in before. I am less stressed about school because I know that if I don’t understand something in class, I can ask the tutors at Oxford Learning and they will help me understand it.Connor![]()

Oxford Learning’s Little Readers program has been a game-changer for my daughter! She started struggling with letter recognition and sounds, but now she’s reading with confidence in kindergarten. The supportive teachers made learning fun, and she’s excited to pick up books on her own. I highly recommend it for building early reading skills!Luke S.![]()
