Screen vs. Paper Reading—Which is Better for Learning?
According to research, how students read—not just what they read—matters!
- Students who read on paper score higher on comprehension tests than those who read on screens.
- Reading on screens leads to skimming and lowered attention and retention.
- Reading on paper engages more senses, which boosts comprehension and recall.

Beat Summer Learning Loss!
Research from the Institute of Summer Learning at Johns Hopkins shows that . . .
- On average, students lose approximately 2.6 months of grade-level equivalency in mathematical computational skills during the summer months.
- Teachers typically spend between four to six weeks re-teaching material that students have forgotten over the summer.
- Students score lower on standardized tests at the end of summer than they do on the same tests at the beginning of the summer.
- They also experience significant learning losses in procedural and factual knowledge during the summer months.
- A few hours a week of learning can prevent summer education losses.
- The brain doesn’t shut off because school is out—the brain MUST stay active, or it loses its momentum.
- If students don’t maintain their learning momentum over the summer, they WILL run into trouble in the fall.
- Summer is an opportunity for students of all ages to catch up, keep up, or get ahead!
Spend some time with us this summer to avoid the summer learning slide and begin the new school year with less stress and more SUCCESS!

My daughter has been receiving tutoring at the Burlington North location for 2 years. When we joined we were very happy with the assessment, it was thorough, aligned with others we had received and gave me insight into what I should be looking for and how to actually interpret the report cards better. At Oxford my daughter has improved in so many areas, she was able to become more confident in her work and additionally her language and vocabulary have improved immensely. All of the teachers we have worked with have been friendly and helpful and can help keep her on track even when frustrated. The program offered us help in so many areas academically but I was surprised there was support on some of her other organizational struggles too. All in all the support she received at Oxford has set her up for success and we will continue to receive support as she grows.Kristen S![]()

Burlington Oxford offered me something my school teacher wasn't able to.....zoned in focused teaching in the areas specific to where I was struggling. The staff at Burlington are incredibly patient. Highly recommend Oxford Learning and wish we had joined much earlier. 14% increase in science and 13% increase in math from Grades 9 to 10. Not only did grades improve, but also a huge increase in self-confidence and effort. My child actually asked to go additional times before tests/exams, etc. and kept herself on track for the first time. Home life was much less stressful, taking parents out of trying to help with schoolwork. She enjoyed all the tutors and has finally seen the value in getting extra help when needed! The Power of goal setting at oxford learning burlington north
Setting goals is a key ingredient in every student’s success. It fosters motivation, responsibility, and a sense of achievement, helping students stay focused and organized in their studies. Goal-setting also builds self-confidence, as students can see their progress and celebrate their accomplishments along the way. More than just an academic tool, learning how to set and achieve goals teaches valuable life skills like time management, perseverance, and problem-solving skills that benefit students far beyond the classroom.
At Oxford Learning Burlington North, we love encouraging our students to set S.M.A.R.T. goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Based) during their sessions. And what better way to make goal-setting exciting than with a special treat?
This fun and rewarding challenge has become a beloved tradition at our centre over the past few years, and our students look forward to it every time a holiday pops up on the calendar (like Easter in April)!
In each class, our students collaborate with their teacher to set a personal goal. If they achieve their goal by the end of their session, they earn a ballot to guess how many chocolates are in the jar! They can submit a new guess at every class leading up to the big reveal, giving them more chances to win. The only catch? They must complete their goal for the day! This fun challenge keeps students motivated while reinforcing the importance of goal-setting and perseverance.
At our centre, we believe learning should be both engaging and rewarding. We have many beloved initiatives that foster an interactive and fun learning atmosphere, including our Reading Comprehension Challenge, Word Problem of the Week, and Grammar Sheet of the Week. These activities not only make learning enjoyable but also encourage students to challenge themselves and celebrate their progress!
We love seeing their hard work pay off!
